Today, June 22nd was our first full day in French Polynesia. After a grueling travel day, don’t worry, we still had time for a Stroop Waffle(ifyky), we started with a beautiful ferry ride to Moore’a. (Fun Fact: Although most commonly thought of in Bora Bora, the overwater hut hotel room was actually first built in the 1960s) After fitting into our clown cars, (I’m 6’6 so pretty much anything besides an F150 is a clown car for me) we all could not wait to get straight into the ocean and boy was it worth it. I’ve snorkeled many times, and never have I experienced this.
Snorkeling here is different, ignoring the strong current, the abundance of life, as an animal scientist, was remarkable. Giant clams and sea cumbers were cool, but my favorite was the threadfin butterflyfish. Appearing as a needle, these fish have rods that stick out from the dorsal (top) aspect of their bodies and are very brightly colored.
Tomorrow, we plan to start sampling and spent a lot of time planning tonight. We can't wait to keep you updated!
